The village sits at the bottom of a bowl the ridges close on three sides, which is why every map reads it as a crater. Eira do Serrado, on the rim above, is one of only four viewpoints on Madeira this site can confirm charges nothing and requires no booking. Bus 181 comes down here direct from Funchal, which makes this one of the few mountain places where a car is genuinely optional.

There is no camera in the valley and none at Eira do Serrado above it. The nearest live views are down in Funchal, on the other side of the ridge — they will tell you about the city’s weather and nothing about this one.

Getting there
Up out of Funchal and over the shoulder of the ridge, or on bus 181, which does it direct. Either way it is a short day, and the thing to establish before you go is when the last bus comes back.
