Leave the rental car behind

See Madeira without renting a car

Four straightforward trips from Funchal, with a current route guide and the one thing to check before you go.

Routes and schedules can change. Open the current guide and check both journeys on the day.

Funchal seen from the water, the city stacked up the green hillside in tiers of white walls and orange roofs, with the seafront and a fort along the shoreline.

Avoid the common bus-day mistakes

Plan the return first

A destination is only a good day trip when the return works for your date.

Match route and direction

The same route number can show two directions. Check the destination on the bus.

Leave breathing room

Do not build a tight connection around the last practical bus of the day.

Fifteen minutes over the rooftops, uncut. It is the one piece of car-free transport that reaches somewhere the buses do not. Check fares and hours with the operator — the uploader’s description is the operator’s own marketing copy, not an independent source.

When the bus is not the best fit

Trying to combine several remote places?

An organised day trip can be simpler when your list includes several distant stops or a fixed return time.

These are live cameras, not photographs. They start on their own as you reach them.
